Burning of the Hats of the Sayones

After the religious ceremony, outside the parish, the sayones begin the process of the burning of hats. This traditional burning symbolizes the repentance of the Roman Centurion soldiers for having crucified Jesus Christ.

Locals become part of the celebration by lighting matches to throw at the tissue paper hats. These hats immediately ignite and turn to ashes.

The sayones dance, skip and jump to avoid and dodge lit matches.
