La Tallera is a public museum of contemporary art and cultural venue located in Cuernavaca, Morelos, in Mexico. It holds a permanent exhibition of murals created by the Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros. Furthermore, the museum has a program of exhibitions, guided tours and workshops.
Background
In the 1960’s, the Mexican art patron Manuel Suárez y Suárez, commissioned Siqueiros to develop 18 large paintings. These works were to decorate the Convention Hall of the Hotel Casino de la Selva in Cuernavaca.
Later, Siqueiros was jailed and there he visualized that instead of large paintings, he would create a mural painting of large proportions. While in jail, Siqueiros painted approximately 200 works that made up the theme of the mural painting.
In 1965, Siqueiros built the Siqueiros Project Workshop. Hence, this was the first workshop for muralism in the world. The idea of Siqueiros was to establish a workshop-school with masters and apprentices. He visualized a true mural workshop where new painting techniques, materials, geometrics, and perspective could be tested.

Siqueiros considered this to be the most effective method for teaching painting.
Curiously, the building was his house-studio in Cuernavaca. Here, Alfaro Siqueiros designed a huge warehouse with mechanical installations to move large panels to a pit. The artist could then work on the panels without the need for scaffolding. In the Siqueiros Workshop, as it was originally called, Alfaro Siqueiros devised a huge warehouse with mechanical installations to move large panels into a pit, that can still be viewed.
In his workshop, Siqueiros created the mural The March of Humanity. This mural painting, originally designed for the Cuernavaca space, ended up in the Poliforum Siqueiros, in Mexico City.

Siqueiros lived in his house-studio for the last 10 years of his life.
Opening of La Tallera
After 2010, the National Council for Culture and Arts (Conaculta) of Mexico, in collaboration with the Mexican National Institute of Fine Arts, recovered the cultural role of La Tallera. Turning the murals of Siqueiros from their original position, design architects opened the courtyard to the square. The murals of the space were rotated outwards, providing a space for synchronism of the adjacent square.

The public areas of the museum were contained, with the cafeteria, bookshop/shop, and the artistic residence separated from the museum-workshop.
In 2012, the space opened to host the museum, workshop, an artistic residency program, and a venue dedicated to art production and criticism.
Today, La Tallera is the headquarters of the International Residency Program and the School of Art Criticism, and operates as more than a museum.
