The Origins of Cinco de Mayo: The Battle of Puebla
In the 1850’s, the Republic of Mexico was in a critical economic situation. So, it was declared that dept payments to foreign countries would be suspended.
Following this declaration, the creditor countries united in order to force Mexico to settle its debts. The countries formed an alliance and sent troops to the Mexican Republic.
At this time, France demanded immediate payment of the debt. Consequently, Emperor Napoleon III sent French troops to Mexico to secure dominance with the intent of establishing a monarchy in Mexico.
This decision initiated an armed conflict between Mexico and France. On April 19, 1862, first shots were fired in Veracruz.
The origins of Cinco de Mayo can be traced back to May 5, 1862, when the Battle of Puebla took place.
What happened on May 5, 1862?
Against advancing troops, Mexican soldiers led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, rushed to fortify the city of Puebla. The French launched an initial attack at Guadalupe Fort in Puebla. At 9 a.m. Mexican troops fired a cannon, stopping the French.

The French attacked twice. Despite the Mexican soldiers being outnumbered and less equipped, they were able to force a retreat by the French.
At the Battle of Puebla, Mexican soldiers defeated a much larger French force. May 5, 1862, was a glorious day for the Mexican Government.
The Cinco de Mayo victory was a major turning point as it gave the Mexican people hope that they could eventually defeat the French invaders.
