On February 24, 1935, Benito Ramírez, an employee of the Bank of Mexico, was the first to pay tribute to the Mexican flag. He organized the first tribute to the Mexican Flag, as a reminder of Mexican identity and independence. The commemoration continued for years.

Officially, the national commemoration was recognized in 1940. President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río declared February 24 as the official Flag Day. The President instituted it in law.

In 1968, President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz made public the Law on the characteristics and use of the National Coat of Arms, the Flag and the National Anthem. In this Law, the specifications were instituted on the rules to respect the Mexican flag.

On February 24, 1984, a new Law on the National Coat of Arms, the Flag and the National Anthem was put into force. The new Law established:

Article 10: February 24 is solemnly established as Flag Day. On this day, special radio and television programs must be broadcast aimed at disseminating the history and significance of the National Flag. On this date, the Authorities will hold civic days in commemoration, veneration and exaltation of the National Flag.

Article 11: In the buildings of the Authorities that due to their characteristics allow it, honors must be paid to the National Flag on a mandatory basis on February 24, September 15 and 16 and November 20 of each year.

In summary, Flag Day in Mexico is an important day for all Mexicans. The Mexican Flag, a patriotic symbol and emblem engraved in Mexico’s history, is widely celebrated annually on February 24. Awareness and respect for the flag is raised, and the Mexican flag is promoted as a patriotic symbol of the history of independence, sovereignty, democracy, and unity of Mexico.
